Atopic dermatitis in dogs and cats

Atopic dermatitis in pets is a common
allergic skin disorder

Atopic dermatitis in dogs and cats develops predominantly from environmental allergens, such as house dust mites and pollens of grasses, trees and weeds.

Sudden onset of itching, particularly of the face, feet, chest, ears and belly, can indicate an environmental or, less likely, a food allergy.

The integrity of you pet´s skin barrier is fundamental;

It acts as a protective shield and a damaged skin barrier will favour the development of atopic disease in pets.

Topical treatments to restore and strengthen the skin barrier, hydrate and soothe will be beneficial for treating atopic dermatitis in dogs or cats.

Treatment of atopic dermatitis in dogs and cats

In acute presentations of atopic disease, rapid-acting symptomatic treatment will be needed. (There are certain medications that can be used to reduce itchiness in dogs and cats.)

In a chronic presentation, the skin changes need to be treated, in order to control the clinical signs and prevent flares of atopic disease as far as possible. It is important to mention that both forms of treatment are complementary and not exclusive.
